Cherry Tenneson is a sign maker and an artist; she uses vinyl as her main media. As part of our project we can use the vinyl cutter so this was interesting and beneficial in our work. She came to our university and showed us a presentation about herself and her work with vinyl and then gave us a small demonstration on how to use this material.
She studied BA Interactive arts and then went on to study an MA in fine art. The interactive arts were a broad section so that she mostly concentrated on graphic design. Cherry then went on to have a five-year job working making signs with vinyl; she has created traffic signs and has two main contracts with the NHS and a Job Centre Plus. Cherry also created an intricate family tree with small lettering. The smallest lettering that the vinyl cutting machine cuts is 12cm, if someone wanted smaller lettering they would have to do this by hand, Cherry has mastered this and does this quite a lot in her work.
After creating so many designs she decided she wanted to create some pieces of art, using the skills she had learnt through the company. Cherry teamed up with a friend to create Tenneson and Dale. They were interested in the fact that vinyl has a smooth finish, which a lot of artists strive for the paint to be smooth. With this main idea in mind they started to look at different minimalist artists for example Donald Judd, Ellsworth Kelly and Frank Stella.
Tenneson and Dale wanted to create work that depicts information, using politics as their main source; they wanted a set of rules that their work could follow depending on the subject. For example the colours represent the parties’ blue is for Conservative, red is for Labour and yellow is Liberal Democrats.
After Cherry’s presentation, she asked us if it would be beneficial if she showed us how to transfer the vinyl onto a surface to make it smooth with no air bubbles. This was very interesting as my first attempt with vinyl I found difficult to use. I know I would be able to complete this more successful after being shown. I was quite pleased with the idea that I could draw onto the vinyl or paint onto this using oil based paint. I enjoyed this presentation and Cherry was very knowledgeable on vinyl, it has widened my view on how to use vinyl.
